Something is happening. You know it is, you can feel it. You are called on to be part of it.
Because time is running out.
We’re almost at the point of no return.
The governments are doing nothing.
Businesses are doing nothing.
This isn’t a distant apocalypse. People all over the world are suffering and dying right now. Whole species are going extinct. And it will only get worse. The time to act is now.
Starting on October 7th, for 2 weeks, Extinction Rebellion is calling an International Rebellion. Together, we will peacefully occupy the centres of power and shut them down until governments act on the Climate and Ecological Emergency.
Leave your desk. Invite your boss. Walk out of school. Switch off the TV. Put down your phone. Get on the streets. And bring everybody.
The science is clear: It is understood that we are facing an unprecedented global emergency. We are in a life or death situation of our own making. We must act now.
“We are in a planetary emergency” Prof. James Hansen, former Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies
“Climate change is a medical emergency…It thus demands an emergency response…” Prof. Hugh Montgomery, director of the University College London Institute for Human Health and Performance, Lancet Commission Co-Chair
“This is an emergency and for emergency situations we need emergency action.” – Ban Ki-Moon, former UN Secretary General
We are facing an unprecedented global emergency. Life on Earth is in crisis: scientists agree we have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown, and we are in the midst of a mass extinction of our own making.
We are unprepared for the danger our future holds. We face floods, wildfires, extreme weather, crop failure, mass displacement and the breakdown of society. The time for denial is over. It is time to act.
Conventional approaches of voting, lobbying, petitions and protest have failed because powerful political and economic interests prevent change. Our strategy is therefore one of non-violent, disruptive civil disobedience – a rebellion.
Historical evidence shows that we need the involvement of 3.5% of the population to succeed – in the UK that’s about 2 million people.
We have three demands in the UK:
- Tell the truthGovernment must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
- Act NowGovernment must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
- Beyond PoliticsGovernment must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
Extinction Rebellion is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse.
